Joseph Grima has been appointed Programme Director for Aral School’s second cohort. Reporting published by Wallpaper* on September 17 places the announcement at the previous week’s assembly in Nukus, Uzbekistan, and identifies Climate and Landscape as the theme for the 2027 programme.
The school, established by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, brings practitioners from different disciplines into the Aral Sea region. Its official programme describes an approach grounded in Karakalpakstan’s environmental conditions, cultural knowledge and local communities. Designers and architects enter a conversation that also includes science, research and other creative fields.
There is an existing body of work to inherit. Aral School’s account of its first cohort records twenty-two participants based in Nukus from January to June 2026, half of them international. Their research centred on food and water, connecting regional systems to ordinary activities such as cooking, growing, making and gathering.
That history gives the leadership change a practical dimension. A new cohort arrives with new questions, but also with responsibility for the relationships and knowledge already established. The value of a recurring programme depends partly on what it can carry forward between groups.
