The Sagrada Família is most often introduced through one name. This September, its official centenary programme opens a different perspective on authorship: the collective effort required to keep an architectural project alive across generations.
Sagrada Família: The Strength of a Shared Dream is scheduled at the basilica from September 18 to December 31, 2026. The institution describes an exhibition focused on the people and key moments that sustained the undertaking. It belongs to the year marking one hundred years since Antoni Gaudí’s death; the anniversary itself fell on June 10, rather than in September.

That distinction matters. The new event is an autumn chapter in a longer commemoration, with a specific opportunity to look beyond the familiar portrait of an isolated visionary. A building that outlives its original architect necessarily becomes a record of interpretation, continuity and responsibility.
The programme announced on September 1 also places popular culture around the basilica, including events on September 19 and 26. This broadens the setting of the commemoration. The surrounding streets and the communities who use them become part of how the institution presents its relationship with Barcelona.
For an architectural reader, the strongest question is how collective authorship will be made visible. Names and dates can document succession, but the more revealing material would show how a decision travels: what is inherited, what must be reconstructed and where a new generation is required to exercise judgment. The published outline does not yet establish how the exhibition will resolve those questions.
That distinction matters.
A centenary can turn a designer into a fixed emblem. The shared-dream framing offers a more demanding possibility: preserving recognition of Gaudí while making room for the many forms of work that allow his building to continue. September’s exhibition is worth following for that shift in emphasis, from the endurance of a signature to the endurance of a collaboration.
