The phrase plant-based material can sound like a new technical category, as though designers recently discovered that the living world might replace petrochemicals. Plant Life: The Nature of Design begins from a more useful position. Plants have always been collaborators in shelter, clothing, tools, ritual and image-making; the rupture is the period in which industrial production trained us to forget them.
Open at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from August 28, 2026 through February 7, 2027, the exhibition moves across furniture, architecture, craft, photography and film. It places contemporary biomaterial experiments beside ancestral knowledge, colonial trade and industrial timber processing, making innovation answer to a deeper material history.

Near-future projects establish the technical stakes. Joris Laarman’s Ply loop chair replaces conventional formaldehyde-based adhesive with a plant-derived resin and is designed for disassembly. Aifunghi’s chair grows hemp fiber into a rigid shell using mycelium. Neither work treats biology as surface styling; structure, binder and end-of-life behavior determine the form.
A commissioned wildfire jacket developed by RMIT designers and scientists tests fungi-grown leather as protective clothing. The prototype remains partly hybrid, incorporating conventional components alongside mycelium. That incompleteness is instructive. Material transition is rarely a clean substitution; performance standards, supply chains and assembly methods have to change together.
Architecture appears at another scale through East Architecture Studio’s AlMusalla Prize pavilion. Reclaimed date-palm waste forms walls rising to 12.5 meters, while approximately 200 kilometers of palm fiber weave across the façade—a distance linked to the pilgrimage route between Jeddah and Mecca. Waste becomes structure, surface and cultural measure at once.

The historical material prevents these objects from becoming a catalogue of solutions. Industrial timber systems expanded access and performance while accelerating extraction. Rare woods traveled through colonial networks as markers of status. A material can be renewable in biological terms and still be destructive through the politics of land, labor and trade.
First Nations and living craft traditions further complicate the idea of novelty. Weaving, kelp vessels, bamboo, lacquer and Amazonian bio-leather carry forms of custodianship and disciplined technique that precede the current biomaterials economy. The exhibition asks contemporary design to recognize knowledge, not simply appropriate its outcomes.
This changes how an object should be evaluated. Carbon data and biodegradability matter, but so do toxicity, land use, repair, cultural ownership and the conditions under which a material is grown. A regenerative material cannot be proven by a compelling sample alone. It needs a system that can regenerate.
The exhibition’s strongest insight is that biology may produce a different design language, not merely greener versions of familiar products. Growth patterns, variable surfaces and time-based processes resist the uniformity associated with petrochemical manufacturing. Designers must decide when to control those differences and when to let them remain visible.
Materials are never neutral. Their sourcing, behavior, fabrication and aging shape both the experience of an object and the values it carries.
Plant Life does not offer a return to an innocent past. It proposes a more accountable future built from old relationships, new science and the memory of industrial consequences. To see the plant inside every designed object is not romanticism. It is the beginning of understanding where matter comes from—and what making asks the living world to become.
